At the same time, compared to January 1, 2014, the permanent population of the country decreased by 272.1 thousand people (-10.5%). The population decline was caused by both migration processes (-36.8 thousand) and natural population decline (-9.9 thousand). It is reported that 52.3% of the population of Moldova are women (1 million 357.2 thousand), men - 47.7% (1 million 239.9 thousand). About 8.1% of the population are citizens aged 30-34 years (-0.1 percentage points per year), 7.7% - aged 35-39 years (-0.2 percentage points). The smallest proportion of the population is aged 85 and over (0.8% of the total resident population). The share of the working-age population (15-64 years old) decreased by 0.4 percentage points over the year - to 66.7%, amounting to 1 million 733.5 thousand people. The statistics indicate a continuation of the aging trend of the population. Thus, the share of elderly people is 14.9% - 387.2 thousand people (-1.7 percentage points per year).
