The Baltic states support increased financial support for Moldova from the European Union and the prompt opening of the first cluster of negotiations to conclude EU accession negotiations by 2028

The speakers of the Baltic parliaments made this statement during their participation in the ceremonial opening of the spring session of the Moldovan Parliament. Among those attending the event were Speaker of the Estonian Riigikogu Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Latvian Seimas Daiga Mieriņa, and Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Juozas Olekas. Moldovan Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu welcomed the presence of the Baltic dignitaries in Moldova, who are on an official visit from February 2 to 4, and emphasized the profound transformations that have taken place in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania since joining the EU in 2004. "These countries' economies have grown significantly, their gross domestic product has tripled, their standard of living has improved, and their state institutions have become stronger and more effective." The Baltic states are a clear example of how EU accession brings concrete results for citizens. We, in turn, have a clear and strong mandate from our citizens to make Moldova a member of the European Union. Parliament and its members play a vital role in this process: in adopting necessary reforms, strengthening democracy, and preparing the country for accession," noted the speaker of the Moldovan parliament. In their speeches from the central podium, the speakers of the Baltic parliaments reaffirmed their unwavering support for Moldova's European path. Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Estonian Riigikogu, stated that Moldova has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination in advancing democratic reforms and its European path, and Estonia firmly supports these efforts. "We believe that Moldova's future lies within the European family. Estonia understands the challenges of reforming institutions, strengthening governance, and building public trust. We are ready to share our experience as a partner ready to support, listen, and cooperate," the Estonian speaker said. In turn, the Speaker of the Latvian Saeima emphasized that Moldova is a role model for other EU candidate countries. "We believe the first round of negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine should begin immediately to bring your countries closer to their stated goal of completing accession negotiations by 2028. At the same time, we can draw inspiration from your experience. Parliamentary elections will be held in Latvia this year, and we will certainly take into account Moldova's experience in preventing disinformation and attempts at external interference in elections," said Daiga Mieriņa. Juozas Olekas, Speaker of the Lithuanian Saeima, emphasized that Moldova's determination and consistency on the path to European integration strengthen the political will in European capitals to expand the EU. "Continued progress on reforms is a compelling argument for increased EU financial support for Moldova, including for economic transformation and reintegration efforts," he said. // 03.02.2026 – InfoMarket.
