Moldova's Ministry of Agriculture is analyzing ways to compensate fruit growers affected by spring frosts
This was reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, which presented preliminary results on the impact of agrometeorological conditions on horticultural crops and noted that this year's spring frosts had a significant impact on Moldova's horticultural sector. This phenomenon, which occurred over 7–8 consecutive nights with prolonged sub-zero temperatures, disrupted the flowering and fruit formation processes in orchards. According to preliminary data from district agricultural administrations, approximately 8,650 hectares of orchards were affected, as confirmed by damage assessment reports. Apricots, plums, cherries, nuts, and apples were the most affected. The apricot and plum harvest is expected to decrease by about 40–45%. In the case of cherries, losses may reach 55%, which is also associated with fruit cracking due to heavy rains. Peaches and cherries are expected to decline by 25-30%, and apples and nuts by 15-20%. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, weather conditions in May, especially precipitation and sufficient soil moisture, contributed to the partial recovery of trees. However, these favorable changes cannot compensate for the losses caused by the April frosts. As for sugar beets, according to official reports, damage was recorded on an area of 6,942.06 hectares. At present, farmers have replanted 6,825.5 hectares. In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry has drafted a government resolution on providing financial assistance to farmers affected by late spring frosts in sugar beet cultivation. The draft provides for partial compensation for seed costs and is currently under public discussion. At the same time, the ministry, in consultation with representatives of the horticultural sector, is analyzing a number of options for supporting affected farmers. The proposed measures include compensation for losses, assessment of financial needs, and identification of available sources of compensation for losses, both domestic and foreign. Detailed information will be provided as soon as the on-site data verification process is completed. // 12.06.2025 — InfoMarket
