Moldova intends to withdraw from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly - Igor Grosu.
At a briefing on Monday, Parliament Speaker announced the decision to initiate the procedure of Moldova's withdrawal from the agreement on the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States. He explained that after 30 years, it has become very clear that Moldova's participation in the CIS structures did not help to resolve the Transnistrian conflict; did not help withdraw the Russian army from Moldova; did not protect the country from the painful economic embargo in the most difficult times - embargo on wine, agro-food products. "Participation in the CIS did not protect us from energy blackmail in the middle of winter, participation in the CIS did not protect the member states from military attacks, war and illegal occupation of sovereign territories. After the Russian Federation, a founding country of the CIS, savagely attacked another founding country, Ukraine, occupying its territories and killing its citizens, this organization can no longer be called a commonwealth," said Igor Grosu. According to him, Moldova's withdrawal from the Agreement on the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly is the first step. "We are evaluating the next steps at the level of the government and parliament. This is a process that takes time. One thing is certain: when they imposed an embargo on apples and wine, it was also a lesson for our producers. They made us look for other markets, negotiate with European countries, remove quotas and allow us to sell our products. And our producers were convinced that Europe is a large and stable market," the Speaker said. He reminded that Ukraine withdrew from the CIS, which makes Moldova geographically separated from all CIS countries. "My message to citizens is simple: Moldova is an independent country, recognized, respected by friends and neighbors, free to make sovereign decisions. Now we have the power and responsibility to turn away from the source of evil, the source of poverty, the source of war and destruction. For 30 years we have shown that we want democracy, freedom and prosperity at home. Step by step, we are doing what citizens expect of us - we are giving our children a future that is stable, prosperous and full of opportunities - a European future. This is what we want, and this is what we will tell to the world on May 21 in the Great National Assembly Square, at the "European Moldova" national assembly, Igor Grosu emphasized. He said that, according to the procedure, during the next meeting of the Parliament's Standing Bureau, he will propose to the Prime Minister Dorin Recean to prepare a legislative initiative on the denunciation of the Convention of March 17, 1998 on the Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS member states. "Later, when it reaches the Parliament, we will vote for the denunciation of the agreement. The CIS is an organization created by Russia on the ruins of the USSR to keep post-Soviet countries in its sphere of influence. We can no longer sit at the negotiation table with an aggressor state," said the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament. // 15.05.2023 – InfoMarket
