In 2023, Moldova allocated $568 million (equivalent to 10.2 billion lei) to service the external public debt, which is $426 million (4 times) more than in 2022.

As noted in the materials of the Ministry of Finance, such dynamics occurred as a result of an increase in the amounts allocated for servicing external public debt, due to an increase in the 6-month Euribor rate and the special drawing rights rate, receipt of new loans in 2022 and 2023 and an increase in amounts to repay the principal amount of the debt, including full repayment of the first and second tranches of the EBRD loan for the implementation of the Security of Natural Gas Supply project for a total amount of EUR 300 million. At the same time, in 2023, the largest share in the total servicing of Moldova’s external public debt during this period fell on the following creditors: EBRD - 66.5% ($377.8 million); IMF - 13.8% ($78.6 million); International Development Association (IDA) - 7.7% ($43.8 million); EIB - 4.7% ($26.9 million); International Bank for Reconstruction and Development - 2.1% ($11.7 million). Herewith, $488.6 million (equivalent to 8 billion 773.7 million lei) was allocated to repay the principal amount of the debt in 2023, which is $376.1 million (4.3 times) more than the previous year. And $79.4 million (equivalent to 1 billion 434 million lei) was transferred to pay interest as part of servicing the external public debt, which is $49.9 million (2.7 times) more than in 2022. // 11.04.2024 — InfoMarket.
