Artificial intelligence can play an important role in modernizing the activity of central banks - Anca Dragu

Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) stated this while speaking at the international AI & Big Data Conference - Humans Powered by AI. The event gathered key decision-makers, including Prime Minister Dorin Recean, top financial industry executives and international experts in the field of new technologies. During the event, Anca Dragu emphasized the role of central banks in the transition to a data-driven and algorithm-driven economy, with a focus on accountability, transparency and security for citizens. She noted that artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool in the service of progress, but it must be guided by human values, ethical principles and a vision that encompasses all social categories. “Digital transformation should leave no one behind. For the National Bank, this transformation is an opportunity for innovation, but also a responsibility to protect financial stability, fairness and inclusiveness,” Anca Dragu said. She emphasized the NBM's progress in implementing AI-based technologies, including in areas such as risk supervision, document processing and institutional interaction. At the same time, the NBM is working on the development of advanced tools for analyzing financial statements, identifying risks and automating institutional processes. Thus, the National Bank seeks not only to modernize, but also to protect the public interest. Speaking about the long-term impact, the NBM Governor noted that AI can play an important role in modernizing central banks' activities. “The central bank of the future means more than just regulation - it means expectation, innovation and trust built on a solid and transparent foundation,” Anca Dragu added. According to her, the vision of the National Bank is integrative and future-oriented. “Moldova has the potential to become a regional model, but for this, it has to build a digital economy in which people will be at the core of every decision,” the NBM Governor said. In this regard, she emphasized the concrete steps taken: the expansion of digital payments and the connection to SEPA - Single Euro Payments Area; the promotion of financial education for all age and income groups; responsible regulation of new technologies in cooperation with European institutions. “Beyond algorithms, numbers and processes, we need to talk about people. We want every citizen to feel part of this transformation. Not only those who live in big cities or in leading industries. Digital Moldova should also be a fair Moldova,” Anca Dragu concluded. // 04.04.2025 - InfoMarket
