
The National Bank of Moldova's (NBM) losses in 2023 amounted to 5 billion 215.9 million lei against a net profit of 2 billion 192.3 million lei a year earlier
According to its financial statements for last year, at the same time, the NBM's distributable profit (year-end) in 2023 amounted to 274.4 million lei, while in 2022 its total losses amounted to 500.5 million lei. This is due to the fact that about 2 billion 686.5 million lei in 2022 was allocated to cover foreign exchange losses from the revaluation of foreign exchange reserves, while in 2023, this item generated revenues of 5 billion 493.5 million lei. At the same time, in 2023, over 3.22 million lei was allocated to cover losses from differences on revaluation of precious metals, whereas a year earlier this indicator amounted to about 6.34 million lei. According to the materials of the financial statements, in particular, the NBM's interest income on short-term placements in 2023, increased almost 2.3 times year-on-year - from 375.6 million to 863.08 million lei. At the same time, interest income on securities increased 4.6 times, from 545.1 million to 2 billion 514.8 million lei, while interest income on issued loans and repos decreased 54 times, from 273.5 million to 5.06 million lei. According to the NBM, its losses from transactions, exchange rate differences and revaluation of precious metals amounted to 5 billion 932.4 million lei in 2023 against a profit of 3 billion 342.4 million lei a year earlier. Losses from revaluation of securities in 2023 amounted to 146.45 million lei, increasing 6.8 times compared to the previous year (21.6 million lei).
