GDP growth and inflation returning to single digits is expected in Moldova by the end of 2023 - EU expert.

This was stated by the Program Manager of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Josip Juric, during the regular edition of the podcast "Give Sense to Money". According to him, the EU experts hope for positive economic growth in Moldova in 2023, and expect further strengthening of economic growth in 2024. "We expect inflation to return to single digits in 2023, and then in 2024, of course, it should be near the target of the National Bank of Moldova. Now, it's very important to say that these are short-term projections, but in the long term what matters is the country's ability to grow faster, and the country needs to grow faster if it wants to recover and if it wants to get closer to the EU level. This growth rate will largely depend on the country's ability to carry out long-term structural reforms, which we in the EU will of course support," Josip Juric said. He admitted that over the last 2 years Moldova has faced many crises: war in Ukraine, energy crisis, refugee crisis, rising cost of living for citizens. "However, I think that in the future, and this is how we see the situation from the EU point of view, we believe that the outlook is positive. This is confirmed by the recent Moody's report, which changed Moldova's outlook from negative to stable. It is important to note that the external elements affecting the economy are external, so by default they do not depend on you, of course, you have to prepare for them. And I think that, as far as Moldova is concerned, the country is much better prepared for the fall and winter season. For example, as far as energy supply is concerned, it has diversified. Moldova has a much more stable macroeconomic context. So we believe that the country is approaching the winter much more prepared than in previous years. And we also believe that while the global context is challenging, it has become a little bit more positive for the country as it has become a candidate country for EU membership. And that's something that Moody's is also emphasizing to improve the rating. We can certainly be more optimistic about the prospects for this year," the program manager of the EU Delegation to Moldova said. // 21.09.2023 - InfoMarket.
