Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) Octavian Armasu will be heard in Parliament on the problem of a sharp reduction in foreign exchange reserves.
The proposal to invite the head of the National Bank to explain this and other issues came from the Bloc of Communists and Socialists faction and was voiced by Vlad Batrincea, Vice-Speaker of Parliament. "We ask to hear NBM President Armasu. We are all concerned about the situation at the NBM, while last year the reserves exceeded $4 billion, recently they have decreased by more than $650 million. We want to understand what policies are being implemented, to hear the arguments of the NBM. We urge the Parliament to control the NBM actively; there are negative experiences in the activity of this structure. Today we propose to listen to Mr. Armasu in order to get more clarity in respect of this situation," said Vlad Batrincia. As a result, this proposal was supported by 53 MPs. That is, it was voted for not only by MPs of the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists and the SOR party faction, but also by part of the "Action and Solidarity" (PAS) ruling party. Speaker Igor Grosu instructed the parliamentary secretariat to contact Octavian Armasu to summon him to the parliament. As InfoMarket agency earlier reported, the NBM foreign currency reserves have decreased by $480.55 million (-12.3%) to $3 billion 421.33 million as of March 18 since early 2022. The currency reserves of the NBM increased by $118.34 million (+3.1%) in 2021, compared to 2020, amounting to $3 billion 901.88 million on December 31, 2021. The absolute record of the NBM currency reserves was registered on October 22, 2021, when they stood at $4 billion 073.42 million. // 31.03.2022 - InfoMarket
