At the end of 2020, about 331.8 million MDL banknotes of various denominations, totaling 32 billion 859.7 million lei, were in circulation in Moldova.
The National Bank of Moldova submitted such data in its report for the last year, noting that the number of banknotes in circulation in quantitative terms increased over the year by 16.6%, and in value terms - by 28%. The quantitative increase in banknotes in circulation was due to a more significant increase in banknotes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 lei. At the end of 2020, in quantitative terms, the most in circulation was denominations with a par value of 1 leu - 85.7 million pieces, which is 25.82% of the total volume. Next follow banknotes in the following denominations: 200 lei - 82 million pieces (24.7% of the total), 100 lei - 50.7 million pieces (15.27%), 50 lei - 47.2 million pieces (14.22%). There were also 21 million pieces of 10-lei banknotes (6.33% of the total), 16.9 million pieces of 5-lei banknotes (5.11%), and 15 million pieces of 20-lei banknotes (4.52%). There were also 10 million banknotes in denomination of 500 lei (3.01%) and 3.4 million pieces of banknotes in denomination of 1,000 lei (1.02% of the turnover). Considering the nominal value, in monetary terms, the largest share in the turnover of cash at the end of 2020 accounted for 200 lei denomination - they were issued for a total amount of about 16.4 billion lei (49.88% of the total amount of paper money in circulation). Next follow 100 lei banknotes - their total nominal value amounted to 5.07 billion lei (15.42%), 500 lei banknotes - 5 billion lei (15.18%), 1000 lei banknotes - 3.4 billion lei (10.27%), 50 lei banknotes - 2.36 billion lei (7.18%).
