Chisinau's Eugen Doga Airport is investing over 700 million lei in expanding its passenger terminal
During a press conference on Monday, the airport's temporary administrator, Sergiu Spoiala, said that the project will be fully funded by the company's own revenue. According to him, the airport has reached record passenger numbers, with 2.5 million people using the airport's services in the first half of 2025, for example. The project will expand the airport's passenger area, reduce congestion, and improve passenger comfort. "This ambitious project marks the beginning of a new era for our airport. The investment, made entirely from the company's own funds, demonstrates our commitment to providing passengers with service of the highest international standards. We are committed to reducing waiting times, improving comfort, and transforming Eugen Doga Chisinau International Airport into a modern and efficient air hub that all citizens can be proud of," said Sergiu Spoiala. Work is scheduled to begin this year, immediately after the construction company is selected through an open tender, and will be completed by the end of 2026. The tender procedures are expected to take approximately two months. The terminal expansion project was developed by the I.P.Office of Territorial Planning, Urbanism, Construction, and Housing (OATUCL) at the request of the airport, and the project design cost 6.5 million lei. As noted by OATUCL Director Nicolae Lupusor, the project involves the reorganization of the check-in and baggage claim areas, the construction of new departure areas, and the introduction of modern technologies such as FAST TRACK (to speed up and predict passenger flow), ABC Gates (automated passport control), and the integration of intelligent systems with self-service elements for baggage handling. The waiting areas and business lounge will also be expanded and additional amenities such as a covered terrace and shower rooms for passengers will be added. “We have developed this project not only to increase space but also to optimize passenger flows. Special attention has been paid to the integration of modern technologies to make every stage of the journey faster and easier,” Nicolae Lupusor clarified. At the same time, Valerian Bobu, Deputy Director of the Public Property Agency, spoke about the financial results of Chisinau Airport in recent years. In 2022, the company's revenues amounted to 2.6 million lei, and in 2023, they increased more than 80 times, reaching 211 million lei. In 2024, the company's revenues continued to grow, exceeding 337 million lei, which is a record figure for all years of the company's operation. "These results clearly demonstrate what transparent and responsible management is capable of. We are satisfied with the company's performance and the results achieved; it is one of the most profitable state-owned companies. It is important to note that in order to consolidate these results, we have announced a public competition at the company aimed at appointing a long-term manager and terminating the activities of temporary managers," said Valerian Bobu. The event noted that the passenger terminal expansion project will be implemented in stages so as not to affect the airport's operations. The project aims to bring the airport into line with international best practices in civil aviation. // 04.08.2025 — InfoMarket
