Work on the expansion and modernization of Chisinau Airport is scheduled to begin in October and be completed by mid-2026

The Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea announced this, noting that the project for the upcoming work will be made public on July 30. After the reconstruction, Chisinau Airport is expected to be able to handle up to 6 million passengers per year. Vladimir Bolea pointed out that this year, more than 2.5 million passengers have already passed through the capital's airport, and if the trend continues, passenger traffic could exceed 5 million people this year. In 2022, it served 2 million 254 thousand199 passengers, in 2023 – 2 million 838 thousand 073 passengers, and in 2024 – 4 million 142 thousand 413 passengers, which is 46% more than in 2023. At the same time, 20-22% of passengers passing through Chisinau Airport are citizens of Ukraine. The Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development said that plans to reconstruct and modernize Chisinau Airport include structural changes to the terminal, as well as its adaptation to international standards with the help of technology, and the ability to handle double the passenger traffic. "On July 30, a modernization project will be unveiled to increase the airport's capacity to 6 million passengers. The runways will be extended, and another floor will be built to house restaurants and waiting rooms. This area will be expanded, which will allow for an increase in the number of checkpoints," said Vladimir Bolea. According to him, reconstruction work on the capital's airport is scheduled to begin in October, when passenger traffic decreases, and the airport's reconstruction is scheduled to be completed by Easter 2026. Earlier it was reported that the large-scale project to expand the passenger terminal at Chisinau Airport is related to a significant increase in passenger numbers and growing demands for high-quality services. This important project aims to improve infrastructure and create a modern, comfortable, and efficient environment for all travelers. The expansion of the passenger terminal at Chisinau Airport will be divided into four phases. The first phase involves expanding the departure control area and introducing new technologies. These will include modern solutions for passenger and hand luggage clearance through the security and passport control areas, including smart security gates, ABC (automatic border control) gates, and other innovations aimed at improving passenger service quality and operational efficiency. The second stage involves expanding the departure hall to provide a more spacious and modern space for passengers, ensuring a high level of comfort, as well as expanding the arrival hall to more efficiently accommodate the increased passenger flow. The third phase involves the modernization and expansion of the baggage sorting and handling area to reduce processing times and increase throughput. The fourth phase envisages the renovation of spaces outside the passenger handling areas and the introduction of new technologies. These will include modern check-in solutions, smart security gates, and other innovations aimed at improving passenger service quality and ensuring operational efficiency. These improvements are necessary to meet the continuing growth in air traffic. // 01.07.2025 — InfoMarket
