The European Parliament calls for accelerating Moldova's accession to the EU and continuing trade liberalization between Moldova and the EU - Siegfried Muresan
This was stated by the Romanian MEP, co-chair of the Parliamentary Committee on the Moldova-EU Association, and co-rapporteur of the European Parliament on the €1.9 billion Economic Growth Plan for Moldova. According to him, the Foreign Affairs Committee voted on May 13 in favor of the European Parliament's annual report on Moldova. In accordance with the amendment submitted by Siegfried Muresan along with his colleagues from the National Liberal Party of Romania and the European People's Party faction in the European Parliament, the report welcomes the Moldovan authorities' commitment to completing the process of reviewing legislation in the context of EU accession and opening the first effective chapters of negotiations in the coming months. In this regard, MEPs ask the European Commission to provide more consistent support to the Moldovan authorities so that these objectives can be achieved and the accession process can be accelerated. At the same time, MEPs call for the continued liberalization of trade between the EU and Moldova. This measure will replace the current temporary liberalization, which has allowed Moldovan agricultural products that were denied access to eastern markets to be redirected to the European market. Siegfried Muresan noted that temporary liberalization has already led to a significant increase in Moldovan agricultural exports to the EU, which has benefited local producers. However, permanent liberalization will provide greater predictability for domestic producers and increase investor confidence in the Moldovan economy. According to him, after the vote in the Foreign Affairs Committee, the report should be submitted for a final vote at the European Parliament's plenary session in May. // 13.05.2025 – InfoMarket.
