The European Union has allocated 151 million euros out of a total package of 310 million euros to partially compensate Moldovan citizens for the increase in electricity prices
The permanent representation of the European Union in Moldova reported this, noting that these funds were transferred directly to the state budget and are provided in gratuitous aid. “The EU supports Moldova, helping people to cope with high costs caused by Russian energy blackmail,” the EU permanent representation in Moldova emphasized. As previously reported, the EU's overall package of measures supports Moldovan consumers facing a sharp rise in electricity prices on the right bank of the Dniester after the termination of electricity supplies from Moldavskaya GRES, starting January 1, 2025. The EU funds will compensate all excessive electricity costs for all households up to 110 kWh monthly until December 31. There is also a support fund from which the most vulnerable households and social institutions, including kindergartens, schools and hospitals, will be compensated for their electricity bills. Additional funding of 15 million euros will be provided to support agri-food and manufacturing enterprises. In addition, thanks to the involvement of international financial institutions, additional funding of 50 million euros will be made available for sustainable investments in energy efficiency projects for local authorities, households and SMEs. Overall, in 2025, total EU assistance to Moldova under this package will amount to 250 million euros, of which 100 million euros will be disbursed by mid-April. In addition to this overall support and within the same strategy, 60 million euros is proposed for the inhabitants of Moldova's Transnistrian region, subject to certain terms. In the longer term, EU assistance will allow Moldova to improve its energy security through investments and reforms for the energy transition and ensure a complete withdrawal from Russian energy supplies. // 24.03.2025 - InfoMarket.
