The vertical gas corridor and the port of Alexandroupolis in Greece have become “lifelines” for Moldova – the Energy Ministry
This opinion was voiced by Energy Minister Victor Parlicov during a panel discussion at the Thessaloniki Summit, where the strategic role of the Alexandroupolis port in the natural gas supply routes to South-Eastern Europe and the need to increase the gas flow through the Vertical Gas Corridor were discussed. In his speech, the Energy Minister emphasized the exceptional importance of the Vertical Gas Corridor, which has provided Moldova with a viable alternative to its historical dependence on Gazprom. “The Vertical Gas Corridor and the port of Alexandroupolis have become 'lifelines' for Moldova and gave us the opportunity to make a choice at a time when we had no other options. Today the right bank Moldova is no longer dependent on Gazprom. We have proved that we can get gas from other sources, and we managed to buy gas on the European market at a cheaper price than the price stipulated in the contracts with Gazprom,” Victor Parlicov said. The Energy Minister also said that, in case the transit of natural gas through Ukraine is stopped, the Vertical Gas Corridor remains a viable technical solution to supply Moldova, excluding the risk of a complete blockade. The speakers also highlighted the need to increase the capacities of the Vertical Gas Corridor and to make a wider use of the Alexandroupolis port and underlined the European Commission's intention to adapt the approaches to gas infrastructure financing in order to support such projects. Priorities to ensure a rapid transition to green energy technologies and solutions were also discussed. The Thessaloniki Summit, organized by Economist Impact Events, brought together energy leaders and experts to discuss energy security and regional cooperation, with a focus on strengthening transport infrastructure and diversifying energy sources for Southeast Europe. // 09.09.2024 – InfoMarket
