Südzucker Moldova has started harvesting sugar beets: more than 60% of the crop was affected by drought
According to the company, Südzucker Moldova planted more than 8,000 hectares of land with sugar beet in 2024, expecting a yield of about 42 tons/ha. However, due to the extreme drought, only about 1/3 of the planned yield is expected to be harvested. Valeriu Nicusor, manager of the Agro-SZM subsidiary, said: “The impact of the drought has put us in a difficult situation. We predict that the decrease in harvest will have a negative impact on the Moldovan sugar industry and will create additional pressure on the whole agricultural sector. We are negotiating with partners to find solutions that will mitigate the effects of this crisis and we are trying to develop support measures for farmers”. According to Anatolie Gorodenco, director of the raw materials department of Südzucker Moldova, the year has become dramatic for all those involved in sugar beet cultivation. In 2024, farmers invested from 35 thousand to 40 thousand lei per hectare. In the current situation, only 16 tons of beets per hectare are expected to be harvested, farmers may face losses of 25 thousand to 30 thousand lei per hectare. “We are in constant dialog with the authorities, discussing measures to subsidize the sugar sector. To ensure sustainable development of agriculture, it is crucial to implement a modern and efficient irrigation system,” Anatolie Gorodenco added. Veaceslav Oleinic, chief agronomist of Südzucker Moldova, said that in 45 years of work in the sector, he has not seen such a difficult year. “The present situation is unprecedented in the last 50 years and has a significant negative impact on production,” he emphasized. Südzucker Moldova is the leading sugar producer in Moldova and part of the international group Südzucker AG, the largest sugar producer in Europe. Over the last 23 years, the company has invested about 60 million euros in the development of technical and technological base for sugar beet production in the country, supporting local farmers and contributing to the Moldovan economy. // 29.08.2024 – InfoMarket
