The finalized concept of Moldova's Energy Strategy until 2050 was discussed on Friday during public consultations.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development reported that in order to achieve an optimal level of energy security while providing end consumers with environmentally sustainable energy at affordable prices, the government initiated in May this year a comprehensive process of reviewing and updating the National Energy Strategy. From May 27 to June 24, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) held five discussion seminars with the participation of stakeholders in the sector. The finalized concept of the state policy document "Moldova’s Energy Strategy until 2050" was presented today during public discussions with the participation of the representatives of the public authorities, civil society, academic and business environment and development partners. Discussions focused on the medium- and long-term objectives of the national energy policy and its priority development directions. The consultative meeting was chaired by the state secretary in charge of the energy sector, Constantin Borosan, who presented the concept of the new Strategy, highlighting the preconditions that dictated the need to initiate this revision process. Among them, he named innovations in the energy sector and international commitments to combat climate change, as well as obtaining the status of EU candidate country, which also involves alignment with the overall objectives of the EU energy and environmental policy. At the same time, Constantin Borosan considered the key elements used: compliance with international obligations, harmonization with existing documents of state policy and addressing specific problems of the energy sector (import dependence, energy intensity, energy poverty, use of local energy potential, etc.). According to him, several important principles - energy security, energy sustainability, affordability - were taken into account when developing the Strategy concept. "All measures to be defined in the Strategy are based on these principles," said the secretary of state. At the end of the discussion session, Constantin Borosan stressed that the public discussions on the concept of Moldova's Energy Strategy until 2050 remain open, and the proposals of all the interested persons will be used in the process of drafting the document.
