The United States will help Moldova strengthen its energy sector, diversify energy supply sources, and improve the country's energy security.
This was reported by the Moldovan office of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) noting that usually the winter heating season puts additional pressure on Moldova and its people, and this year, due to the war in Ukraine, rising gas prices as a result of the energy crisis caused by the war, and reduced gas supplies to Europe, winter is expected to be even more harsh. This situation once again justifies the urgent need for Moldova to diversify its energy sources and improve the country's energy security. It is emphasized that the United States is cooperating with the government of Moldova in order to ensure the energy security of the country within the framework of the Moldova Energy Security Activities (MESA) project funded by USAID. Through MESA, USAID is expanding its efforts to strengthen and diversify Moldova's energy sector, thereby developing the country's energy security in the long term, which supports Moldova's sovereignty. Today, Deputy Administrator of the USAID Office for Europe and Eurasia Erin McKee, together with US Ambassador to Moldova Kent Logsdon and USAID Mission Director to Moldova Scott Hocklander visited Moldelectrica. USAID has been working with it for several years to promote integration into the European electricity grid, promote renewable energy, and ensure that Moldova is cyber-security ready. As noted, USAID and the government of Moldova propose 3 main goals for MESA: connecting Moldova to the EU electricity grid and markets; use of renewable energy sources (solar and wind energy) to increase energy supply, reduce dependence on other countries and achieve climate change goals; attracting private sector investment in energy production and energy efficiency initiatives. “We believe that connecting key elements of Moldova's energy sector to European systems, attracting investments for domestic production of clean energy and identifying new sources of natural gas will ensure sustainable economic growth and become a catalyst for Moldova's integration into Europe. If we are successful, we will see millions of dollars invested in local clean energy projects that meet European standards and produce enough electricity to keep lights on and services and businesses running,” said Erin McKee. // 16.09.2022 — InfoMarket
