Moldova has begun the process of revising and rethinking its Energy Strategy.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development reported this, noting that the government initiated a comprehensive review and update of the National Energy Strategy in order to strengthen the country's energy independence and ensure safer, more affordable and sustainable energy for Moldovan citizens. As noted, the changing world realities - declining costs of renewable energy, rising oil and gas prices, and the problem of regional energy security - should be reflected in the Strategy's goals and objectives. In addition, innovations in the energy sector and international commitments to combat climate change lead to the adoption of new tools and approaches that Moldova can use for sustainable economic growth and to accelerate European integration. The process of revising the Energy Strategy of Moldova has begun with a series of workshops organized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) that will bring together dozens of stakeholders. Government representatives, public and private participants will discuss specific energy issues with national and international experts. Discussions will focus on the latest energy strategies and policies in the European Union, as well as on the latest developments in European legislation and the EU energy strategy promoted by the Energy Community. The first seminar was held in Chisinau late last week and focused on energy efficiency in public and residential buildings, as well as in industry and transport. The experts stressed the importance of transposing EU goals to improve energy efficiency in buildings and promote smart technologies. Andrei Spinu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, said there have been too many recent challenges in Moldova, from the energy crisis that began in October 2021 to the war in Ukraine, and now the authorities are focused and determined to rethink the new Energy Strategy in order to become more sustainable and independent. "Through this adjustment of the strategy, we must ensure that consumers save money, reduce CO2 emissions and reduce dependency," he said. For his part, USAID Moldova Mission Director Scott Hocklander said USAID seeks to support the integration of Moldova's energy sector with Europe through the USAID Moldova Energy Security Activity (MESA) Project. Through the MESA Project, USAID seeks to increase the integration of renewable energy systems and investments in domestic energy production. "This workshop is an important step as it is the first in a series of consultations and collaborations. We look forward to hearing views and suggestions from all key national and international partners," said Scott Hocklander. The 5-seminar series will run until June 24 and will focus on topics such as domestic renewable energy, solar and wind energy; power generation; energy market development and energy infrastructure. Experts will also address issues related to improving the country's oil storage facilities, greening the transportation sector, hydrogen supply and more. // 30.05.2022 – InfoMarket
