Moldova hopes for EU assistance in the form of fertilizer supplies for agricultural producers and will send a corresponding letter to the EU.
This was stated by Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita at a government meeting on Wednesday, instructing the head of the Ministry of Agriculture Viorel Gherciu to prepare a draft of such a letter. The head of the Cabinet said that she had previously discussed this issue with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, who is in Chisinau, spoke about the problems with ensuring food security that will arise around the world in connection with the war in Ukraine. She noted that it is extremely important to find new suppliers of fertilizers at affordable prices. “I know that the Ministry of Agriculture is making efforts to purchase them in the countries of Central Asia. But we will also try to get help from the European Commission. I will sign a corresponding letter with a request to the EU, which needs to be prepared in a short time, and it would be good to have all the necessary volumes of fertilizers for our agricultural producers,” the Prime Minister emphasized. For his part, Viorel Gherciu said that the agency is taking a number of measures to solve the problem of fertilizers and is trying to diversify the range of suppliers. He noted that back in February, during his visit to Azerbaijan, he held negotiations on the supply of fertilizers to Moldova. Additionally, sources were found to ensure the supply of fertilizers to Moldova from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. “Tomorrow I will go back to Baku and hold discussions on the same topic with the state company Socar, which is also a fertilizer producer in Azerbaijan. And, if the EU also provides us with assistance, it will be very timely and highly appreciated by Moldovan farmers,” Viorel Gherciu stressed. To this, the head of government noted that it is too early to talk about this, the Moldovan side will ask, but the chances of receiving this assistance from the EU are high. The head of the Ministry of Agriculture recalled that the price of fertilizers is very important for the cost of finished products and it is imperative for farmers to get them at a reasonable price in order to prevent the final product from becoming more expensive. // 04.05.2022 — InfoMarket
