The EBRD will attract strong international investors to further develop the Giurgiulesti Port.
This was stated by Matteo Patrone, Managing Director for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), while he visited the port of Giurgiulesti. The EBRD is the sole owner of Danube Logistics, the port operator. According to the EBRD, Matteo Patrone, who is visiting Moldova to meet with the new government and private companies, welcomed the professional port management by Danube Logistics and stressed the importance of Moldova’s only international port for trade and economy. He noted that the EBRD has been supporting the construction and operation of the port since 1995. “We are actively working to promote the continuation of the successful operation and development of this key infrastructure asset and will seek to attract international investors to further support and develop the port,” said the Managing Director for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus at European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Giurgiulesti Port hosts 48 resident companies, employs 517 people and serves trade with more than 50 countries. The port is used for the export of grain and vegetable oil, as well as for the import of fuels, building materials and general goods. Danube Logistics CEO Mathias von Tucher noted that after a difficult last year, marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and crop failure due to severe drought, the volume of cargo handled in Giurgiulesti port is expected to increase to 1 million tonnes in 2021 from 934 thousand tonnes in 2020. “In addition, in 2022 we plan to start building a new berth, allowing for transshipment of dry bulk cargo and general cargo in order to expand capacity. When ongoing projects are completed in 2022, a total of EUR 100 million would have been invested in the port since 2005,” said Matthias von Tucher. The EBRD acquired 100% of Danube Logistics on May 7, 2021. The bank is a major institutional investor in Moldova and has so far invested more than EUR 1.4 billion in the country in 146 projects. He has also provided consulting services to over 1000 Moldovan companies to help them improve their performance and grow. Matteo Patrone is visiting Moldova to underscore the EBRD’s support for Moldova, welcome the new government’s commitment to reforms and discuss the investment climate with local businesses. // 04.10.2021 - InfoMarket
