
Moldova’s internal public debt reached a new record level, having increased in April 2021 by about 0.38 billion lei (+ 1.2%) - up to 31 billion 893.2 lei.
The previous record indicator of the internal public debt of Moldova was registered at the end of March 2021, when it amounted to 31 billion 509.9 million lei. Thus, in April, the internal public debt increased by 383.3 million lei (+ 1.2%), and in general, in January-April 2021, the internal public debt of Moldova increased by 2 billion 657.6 million lei (+ 9.1%), amounting to 31 billion 893.2 million lei as of the end of April 2021 against 29 billion 235.6 million lei as of the end of December 2020. According to the Ministry of Finance, such a change in the domestic public debt occurred due to an increase in the issue of government securities in the primary market. In particular, as of the end of April 2021, the debt on state securities issued in the primary market amounted to about 17 billion 206.37 million lei, which is 2 billion 645.34 million lei (18.2%) more than as of the end of 2020 (14 billion 561.03 million lei), and its share accounted for 53.95% of the total volume of the domestic public debt. At the same time, the debt on bonds issued for the Ministry of Finance to fulfill payment obligations arising from state guarantees dated November 17, 2014 and April 1, 2015 amounted to 12 billion 611.2 million lei as of the end of April 2021, unchanged, compared to the situation as of the end of 2020. It accounted for 39.55% of the total amount of the internal public debt of Moldova as of the end of April 2021. The debt on converted government securities as of the end of April 2021 amounted to 2 billion 075.6 million lei, having increased, versus the situation as of the end of 2020, by 12.21 million lei (+ 0.6%) and amounting to 6.5% of the total amount of domestic public debt as of the end of April 2021. According to the Ministry of Finance, in April 2021 the weighted average the interest rate on government securities sold at auctions amounted to 4.98% (by types of government securities: 91 days - 3.35%, 182 days - 4.93%, 364 days - 5.5%, 2 years - 5.49%, 3 years - 5.85%, 5 years - 6.1%, 7 years - 6.5%), which is 0.34 percentage points less versus the same period of the previous year.
