The Constitutional Court of Moldova declared unconstitutional the decree of the President Maia Sandu on the re-nomination of Natalia Gavrilita to the post of Prime Minister.

This decision was made by the Constitutional Court at a meeting on Tuesday, February the 23rd. As noted by the chairperson of the Constitutional Court Domnica Manole, the Constitutional Court ruled that in order to comply with the provisions of the Constitution, parliamentary factions and the president must hold new consultations on the appointment of a candidate for the post of prime minister. At the same time, the Constitutional Court called inadmissible the request of the authors of the petition - the Socialist Party of RM deputies - to assess whether the president committed a gross violation of the Constitution by refusing to appoint Mariana Durlesteanu as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister, whose nomination was supported by 54 deputies from the Socialist Party of RM, the Sor party and the parliamentary group "For Moldova". As previously reported, President Maia Sandu re-nominated Natalia Gavrilita as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister on 11 February. The head of state said that she received a letter with a proposal to nominate Mariana Durlesteanu as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister, which was signed by 54 deputies. At the same time, as Maia Sandu noted, this document also contains signatures of persons in respect of whom there are reasonable doubts that they freely expressed their will, since among them were people who became victims of abduction, involved in the “theft billion ”, as well as deputies who have changed several political parties and parliamentary groups, and in relation to some of them there are reasonable suspicions of corruption and external pressure. In this situation, the President decided to nominate Natalia Gavrilita as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister, instructing her to form a government team and prepare a program of its activities and submit it to parliament again. The decision of Maia Sandu was appealed to the Constitutional Court by deputies from the Socialist Party of RM, accusing the president of a serious violation of the Constitution and an attempt to usurp power, since the previous resolutions of the Constitutional Court oblige the president to nominate a candidate for the post of prime minister proposed by the formed parliamentary majority.// 23.02.2021 — InfoMarket.
