The Republic of Moldova is diversifying its investment landscape beyond the industries that have traditionally attracted foreign capital. Sectors such as automotive and electronics, IT and agri-food already have a strong presence on international markets and make an important contribution to exports, while renewable energy, infrastructure, financial services, real estate and tourism are gaining momentum.

The potential of these sectors is supported by investments and projects developed in recent years, as well as by closer economic ties with the European Union, access to new sources of financing and the development of support mechanisms for investors. The next stage therefore focuses on attracting greater volumes of capital and supporting sectors with strong export potential and the capacity to integrate into European value chains.

These sectors will be a key focus of Moldova Business Week 2026 (MBW 2026), where investors will be able to explore existing opportunities, available projects and the development prospects of the Republic of Moldova's economy.

Automotive and electronics: more than €350 million invested

In the automotive industry, foreign investment has already helped build a production ecosystem geared towards the European market. Over the past 15 years, the sector has attracted more than €350 million in investment and created more than 14,000 jobs.

Investor interest remains strong. At the beginning of this year, British company Cornelius Electronics announced an investment of approximately €5 million to expand its production operations at Edineț Industrial Park in northern Moldova. The company manufactures wiring harnesses and connection systems used across 14 industries, including healthcare, artificial intelligence, rail transport and renewable energy, serving export markets and industrial clients in the European Union.

The presence of international companies, accumulated expertise in component manufacturing and proximity to major European industrial centres provide the sector with a solid foundation for further investment.

IT – an export-oriented sector

The IT sector continues to attract capital. At the end of 2025, the IT industry accounted for 5.2% of the stock of foreign direct investment in the form of equity, equivalent to approximately €193 million, according to data from the National Bank of Moldova.

An important advantage is the ecosystem developed around Moldova Innovation Technology Park (MITP), which offers companies a simplified tax regime, including a single 7% tax on revenue, as well as a predictable legal framework.

The park's virtual model, the IT Visa mechanism, digital infrastructure and skilled workforce strengthen the Republic of Moldova's attractiveness for investment in technology, business process outsourcing (BPO), research and development. As the Republic of Moldova becomes more closely integrated with the European market, the IT sector can also attract projects involving regional operations and the development of specialised teams in the country.

Agriculture and the agri-food industry remain among the leading sectors

These sectors offer significant opportunities for developing processing, storage, packaging and value-added production capacities. At the end of 2025, agriculture, forestry and fishing accounted for 1.3% of the stock of foreign direct investment in the form of equity, equivalent to €48 million.

The sector's potential is also supported by investments from local companies. One example is AGG Group, which this year invested approximately US$5 million in the acquisition and modernisation of a poultry farm.

The project aims to increase production capacity, improve operational efficiency and bring infrastructure in line with modern quality and food safety standards. It is also expected to create approximately 100 new jobs.

The sector's contribution to exports and the investment projects it has attracted further highlight its investment potential.

Energy, logistics, financial services and HoReCa attract new projects

Investor interest is expanding into sectors that will feature prominently on the Moldova Business Week 2026 agenda and that have also been among the areas in which the Invest Moldova Agency facilitated investment projects over the past year.

In the logistics sector, Romanian company MS Projects, specialised in heavy and oversized transport and logistics for industrial and energy projects, has expanded into the Republic of Moldova. With the support of the Invest Moldova Agency, the company opened an office in Chișinău and has already delivered the country's first battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Renewable energy is attracting investment and rapidly expanding its capacity. At the end of June 2026, the Republic of Moldova had 1,074 MW of electricity generation capacity from renewable sources, while in 2025 renewable energy accounted for 24.5% of gross final electricity consumption.

The first competitive tender for the development of 165 MW of wind and photovoltaic capacity is expected to generate approximately €200 million in investment.

In August 2026, the results of the second tender were also announced: seven wind projects with a total capacity of 170 MW were selected as winners, with an obligation to install energy storage systems.

These results confirm the sector's potential and open up new opportunities for investment in renewable energy generation and storage in the Republic of Moldova.

Financial services are another sector with significant investment potential on the MBW 2026 agenda, accounting for more than 30% of the total FDI equity stock. At the end of 2025, this amounted to approximately €1.23 billion.

The presence of European financial groups is also supporting the development of the capital market, payment services and digital financial products.

Tourism and HoReCa continue to expand. The Republic of Moldova welcomed more than half a million tourists in 2025, 10% more than in the previous year.

Exports of travel services reached €845 million, creating further opportunities for investment in accommodation, food services and related activities.

Commercial real estate accounted for 4.9% of the stock of foreign direct investment at the end of 2025. With a volume of approximately €182 million and a shortage of modern commercial and logistics space, the market offers opportunities for new project development.

Infrastructure, another important sector on the MBW 2026 agenda, attracted approximately €389 million in investment for civil engineering works in 2025, an increase of 23.5% from the previous year.

Road, rail and energy connectivity projects, supported in part by the EU Growth Plan with up to €1.9 billion in funding, are creating new opportunities for private investment.

Investment potential is also supported at national level through Moldova's first state aid scheme for industrial investment. The scheme provides reimbursement of approximately 60% of the value of eligible investments in areas such as electronics, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, machinery and automotive component manufacturing, textiles, construction materials, and food production, for new projects worth at least MDL 10 million.

The scheme has a budget of at least MDL 2 billion and is intended to support the expansion of production and attract new investment to the Republic of Moldova.

More than €1 billion in new partnerships and investment projects announced in 2026

Interest in new investment in the Republic of Moldova was also evident at the EU–Moldova High-Level Investment Conference, where investment partnerships worth more than €1 billion were announced.

For the country's economy, this mobilization of capital and financing can accelerate the development of new infrastructure and energy projects, while also creating opportunities for local companies to become partners with international investors.

From 28 September to 2 October 2026, Moldova Business Week 2026 will provide businesses and potential investors with direct access to investment opportunities through practical discussions, concrete examples and direct connections with relevant companies and partners.

Over the five days, the programme will include thematic forums, B2B sessions and discussions dedicated to business development and investment.
