According to the Ministry of Finance of Moldova, the decline in total public debt in January 2024 was due to a decrease in external public debt expressed in lei by 385.9 million lei (-0.6%) - from 64 billion 337 million lei (at the end of December 2023) to 63 billion 951.1 million lei (at the end of January 2024), while domestic public debt increased over the same period by 189.2 million lei (+0.5%) - from 39 billion 666.1 million to 39 billion 855.3 million lei. At the same time, the share of internal public debt in the total amount of public debt of Moldova at the end of January 2024 amounted to 38.4% (a month earlier - 38.1%), and the share of external public debt - 61.6% (61.9%). In general, the share of total public debt in GDP at the end of January 2024 is estimated at 30.8% versus 34% at the end of 2023. Moreover, according to preliminary data, GDP in 2023 amounted to 305.9 billion lei, and according to the results of 2024, it is projected at 336.8 billion lei. The Ministry of Finance noted that at the end of January 2024, the share of government debt payable within 1 year amounted to 30.3% of the total volume, the share of domestic government debt in the total volume of government debt was 38.4%. The share of government debt in a certain currency in the total volume of government debt at the end of January 2024 was 38.2%, and the share of government debt with a variable interest rate in the total volume of government debt as of the same date was 50.7%.
