In 6 months of 2022, the MDL depreciated against the USD by 7.8% and against the EUR by 0.1%.
According to the Ministry of Economy, on January 1, 2022 the exchange rate of the MDL against the USD was 17.75 MDL/$, while on June 30 - 19.12 MDL/$. Against the EUR the MDL has depreciated since the beginning of the year by 0.1%, amounting to 20.11 lei per euro at the end of June. Such dynamics is associated with the fluctuations of the USD in international markets and the intervention of the National Bank in the domestic market in the form of currency sale. The report of the Ministry of Economy noted that the devaluation of the MDL was also affected by the fact that the demand for hard currency exceeded the supply on the domestic foreign exchange market. According to the National Bank, economic agents’ net demand for currency was covered by the net supply from individuals at 60.5%: net supply from individuals amounted to $810 million (-18.9%), while legal entities’ supply - $1 billion 338.2 million (+25.7%). It is noted that in June, the situation on the foreign exchange market normalized: individuals’ supply increased by 21.3%, while legal entities’ demand grew by 26.5%. As a result, the degree of coverage of the internal demand for foreign currency by the net supply from individuals amounted to 101.8%. // 09.08.2022 – InfoMarket
