Moldova will develop a National Financial Education Strategy.
NBM President Octavian Armasu stated this during the National Financial Education Forum held by the National Bank on March 21 as part of the International Financial Literacy Week (Global Money Week 2023). He spoke about the actions taken by the NBM to improve the level of financial literacy of the population. These include various activities for children and youth, holding round tables and financial literacy development camps, organizing visits to the NBM, etc. He emphasized that financial education has become an integral part of modern life, so the next step is the development of the National Strategy for Financial Education, which systematizes the actions of everyone - from government to citizens. “We want our society to know how to properly manage its funds, and every citizen to be able to make rational decisions regarding their money,” said Octavian Armasu, emphasizing that the strategy is designed to create conditions for financial education and ensure the continuity of this process, so that citizens can solve dilemmas related to finances, and the economy becomes stronger and more attractive for investment. The need to improve financial literacy was also expressed by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who emphasized that financial education must be introduced from school, then in universities, and then promoted through financial institutions. According to him, this will contribute to the development of society, educate a class of society that understands well what money means as a resource and how to use it. Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission on Economy, Budget and Finance Radu Marian noted that, despite certain progress in the field of improving financial literacy, the authorities still have to intervene with regulatory measures and standards, increasing the responsibility of citizens and businesses to finance, because, for example, is still relevant the problem of issuing and obtaining loans without proper financial coverage. At the same time, he noted that financial literacy will help citizens understand the sphere of public finance - how the economy works, how budgets are formed, how funds are spent, etc. Within the framework of the forum, several panels of discussions were organized, during which experts and representatives of other countries presented international experience in the field of financial education, the role of authorities and civil society in this process, aspects that should be reflected in the draft development of the National Financial Literacy Strategy. The discussions were attended by Rodgers Chawani, Head of the IMF Office in Moldova, Inguna Dobraja, Head of the World Bank Office in Moldova, Laura Hruby, Deputy Head of Mission of the US Embassy in Moldova, representatives of diplomatic missions, international organizations, and educational institutions, experts, etc. They discussed the implementation of campaigns to improve financial literacy, the possibility of including certain subjects in the field of financial education in the national curriculum, the most effective tools to increase the interest of young people and adults in financial education (games, podcasts, video channels and blogs, lectures, surveys), etc. // 21.03.2023 — InfoMarket
