Moldova and Romania are preparing an application for EU funding for the construction of a multimodal terminal at the Bere?ti railway station in the Ungheni district

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, negotiations on the construction of a multimodal terminal at the Bere?ti railway station took place in Ungheni. Mircea Pascalu?a, State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova, together with his Romanian counterpart Irinel Ionel Scrio?teanu, held a working meeting on the preparation of an application for funding for the construction of a multimodal terminal at the Bere?ti station, which will be submitted to the European Commission. Representatives of the Moldovan and Romanian authorities involved in the project also took part in the discussions. After the meeting, the officials visited the Bere?ti railway station to examine the proposed location and technical configuration of the area where the terminal will be built. The officials also visited the construction site of the bridge over the Prut River in Ungheni, where work is proceeding according to schedule. The multimodal terminal in Ungheni is a strategic project that will connect Moldova to international transport corridors, strengthen the country's role as a railway logistics hub in the region, and integrate our infrastructure into the European Union network. Earlier it was reported that the multimodal logistics center at the Bere?ti freight railway station in the Ungheni district will be built on approximately 18 hectares of state-owned land and will be equipped with railway and road access roads, container cranes, cargo handling platforms, warehouses, and other facilities. Strengthening the logistics infrastructure will have an impact on the development of the transport sector and the growth of Moldova's economy. This will be a boost to strengthening Moldova's role in the region. The market segments targeted by the multimodal logistics centre in Bere?ti include imports and exports facilitated by infrastructure connecting Bere?ti with the region's seaports, continental transport to/from European countries, conventional rail transport, transit and transshipment of goods. The regional logistics center in Bere?ti will contribute to increased trade with Romania, the Balkan countries, Central and Western Europe, as well as increased international transit of goods through Moldova, facilitating access to international corridors. However, the main benefits will come from intermodal freight transport, which will lead to significant time savings, lower tariffs, and increased safety and reliability of both freight and road traffic in Moldova. The multimodal logistics center will be located on the territory of the Bere?ti freight railway station in the Ungheni district, which was built 70 years ago and has fallen into disrepair due to a lack of investment. According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, the proposed investment project is a unique opportunity to modernize the railway infrastructure and transform the region into a regional logistics center. This strategic project will put Moldova on the intermodal transport map, facilitate access to international corridors, and contribute to the development of a sustainable and competitive economy. // 20.11.2025 — InfoMarket
