Moldova rose from 89th to 85th place in the Economic Freedom Index among 165 countries and territories in a single year

This follows from the new annual Economic Freedom of the World 2025 ranking by the Fraser Institute. The ranking reflects data for 2023, the most recent year for which sufficiently comprehensive data is available. In the Economic Freedom of the World 2024 ranking published last year, which included data for 2022, our country ranked 89th, while in the new ranking, it ranks 85th. Moldova's neighbors, Romania and Ukraine, ranked 50th and 143rd, respectively. The Economic Freedom of the World ranking assesses countries' economic freedom across five dimensions: government size, legal system and property rights protection, access to reliable money, freedom to trade internationally, and business and labor market regulation. Moldova's best performance among countries in the new ranking was in size of government, ranking 32nd (27th a year earlier). It ranked 59th (53rd) in legal system and protection of property rights, 130th (145th) in access to safe money, 68th (67th) in international trade freedom, and 129th (112th) in business and labor market regulation. The top 10 countries in the Economic Freedom of the World 2025 ranking included Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United States, Ireland, Australia and Taiwan (shared 7th place), Denmark, and the Netherlands. The rankings of the world's other largest economies are: Canada - 11th place, the United Kingdom - 13th, Germany - 15th, Japan - 17th, South Korea - 38th, France - 44th, Italy - 46th, Indonesia - 65th, Mexico - 70th, India - 86th, Brazil - 87th, China - 108th, Russia - 148th.
