Moldova's key energy goals are full integration into the EU energy market, increasing sustainability through regional cooperation, and strengthening the country's energy sovereignty - the Ministry of Energy
Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu stated this while speaking at the Romanian Energy Symposium (SIREN) held this week in Bucharest under the slogan “Resilient and Just Transition for the Romanian Energy Sector.” The event was attended by government representatives, experts, companies, and international organizations to discuss the main challenges and solutions in the context of the energy transition. In his speech at the opening of the event, Dorin Junghietu emphasized Romania's crucial role in supporting Moldova in everything related to the process of strengthening national energy security and European integration. The head of the Ministry of Energy expressed gratitude to Romania and EU partners who facilitated Moldova's access to energy markets, supplied electricity to Moldova on favorable terms, and contributed to increasing interconnection capacities. According to him, Romania's support was also vital thanks to the provision of a certain amount of fuel oil free of charge, which helped maintain energy stability. Dorin Junghietu stressed that the completion of the Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line remains an absolute priority for Moldova, along with the acceleration of two other interconnection projects with Romania - Balti-Suceava and Straseni-Gutinas. He noted that these investments will strengthen Moldova's integration into the European energy market. At the same time, Dorin Junghietu stressed that European integration is a vital goal for the development of the national energy sector. “One of our main goals is full integration into the EU internal energy market to ensure stable prices and reliable supplies. This goal can only be achieved through close cooperation with Romania and the expansion of interconnections for electricity and natural gas,” he said. The Minister of Energy also listed Moldova's key energy objectives: full integration into the EU energy market, increasing sustainability through regional cooperation and strengthening energy sovereignty, ensuring energy supplies through interconnection and market liberalization, developing renewable energy production and promoting efficient consumption, and, finally, creating a modern energy system with affordable prices for citizens. During the discussions, Dorin Junghietu recalled that it was the energy crisis triggered by Russia's aggression in Ukraine that demonstrated the fragility of dependence on imported sources and the urgent need for Moldova's integration into the European market. On the other hand, according to European Commission estimates, the modernization and expansion of European energy networks will require investments of around €1.2 trillion by 2040, and Moldova must actively participate in this regional dynamic. Another central theme of the Energy Minister's speech was the integration of renewable energy sources. According to him, Moldova has significant potential in the field of solar and wind energy, but the existing infrastructure needs to be modernized in order to effectively develop new capacities. In this regard, Dorin Junghietu stressed the need for parallel investments in the grid and participation in European balancing mechanisms. As noted by the Ministry of Energy, the SIREN symposium, held annually in Bucharest, examines energy in all its complexity – from national strategies and policies to consumer issues. This year, the debates were structured around four main topics: energy transition strategies and policies, investment programs, new technologies, and trade and market policies. SIREN discussed the reconfiguration of the energy sector in the context of Romania's socio-economic development, the EU's 2030 targets set out in the Clean Energy for All Europeans package, and the implementation of the European Green Deal 2050. During the event, Dorin Junghietu held meetings with Romanian Minister of Investment and European Projects Dragoș Pâslaru and State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Cristian Bușoi. The parties held practical discussions on Moldova's energy market, analyzing both current challenges and future opportunities. Important ongoing projects were also discussed. Cristian Bușoi confirmed Romania's strong support and complete openness to assisting Moldova in the process of developing and strengthening its energy sector. // 23.09.2025 — InfoMarket.
