New World Bank Country Manager Ulrich Schmitt begins his mission in Moldova
The World Bank Group has appointed Ulrich Schmitt as Country Manager for Moldova, effective July 1. He will replace Inguna Dobraja, who has held this position since July 2021. Ulrich Schmitt is a German national and most recently served as Country Manager for Myanmar and Thailand, based in Bangkok. He oversaw the World Bank's operational program, office operations, and strategic engagement in both countries. Ulrich Schmitt has worked at the World Bank for over 20 years. He was senior agricultural economist in the World Bank's Europe and Central Asia Department in Washington, head of the sustainable development program at the World Bank's office in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and senior natural resources economist for investment operations and analytical tasks in Beijing. He holds a PhD in Natural Resource Management from the Technical University of Munich. "I am honored to represent the World Bank Group in Moldova, where I will work closely with the public and private sectors to find solutions to create jobs, improve human capital, and enhance Moldova's competitiveness. Despite a series of crises triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as well as other persistent development challenges, Moldova's status as an EU candidate country, combined with a strong momentum of reforms and investments in sustainability, provides the country with an excellent opportunity to foster long-term sustainable growth," said Ulrich Schmitt on the occasion of the start of his mandate in Moldova. The World Bank press service noted that the World Bank Group supports regulatory reform and promotes green, sustainable, and inclusive development and competitiveness with three key objectives: job creation, improving human capital, and increasing green investment, especially in infrastructure and agriculture. The current Country Partnership Framework for Moldova reflects this integrated approach with activities to support sustainable development and the country's EU membership aspirations, as well as capacity building and digitalization efforts to strengthen public and private sector systems and institutions. // 02.07.2025 – InfoMarket.
