The national banks of Moldova and Romania will expand cooperation in order to adapt the banking sector and payment infrastructure of Moldova to the European framework after joining SEPA
In particular, this was discussed during the meeting of the leadership of the central banks of the two countries. The NBM said that, in particular, Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Anca Dragu, paid a working visit to the National Bank of Romania on Friday, where she met with its president Mugur Isarescu. This is the first inter-institutional visit after Moldova's accession to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), which is a landmark moment for the country's European financial integration. Discussions between the delegations of the two central banks focused on Romania's experience in the SEPA integration process, and on adopting best practices in adapting the payment infrastructure to European standards. “Joining SEPA marks a decisive stage for the Moldovan economy. This system simplifies and optimizes cross-border payments in euros, offering citizens and companies the same benefits as in EU Member States. We are honored that the NBM has contributed to this process and we intend to continue the European financial integration, taking over the best experience of the countries that have already passed this way,” NBM Governor Anca Dragu said. NBR President Mugur Isarescu welcomed Moldova's accession to SEPA and emphasized the importance of strengthening relations between the two central banks. The visit of the NBM delegation to the NBR marks the beginning of an extended inter-institutional dialog on the adaptation of the Moldovan banking sector and payment infrastructure to the new European structure. In this context, the discussions focused on the regulatory and supervisory mechanisms applied in Romania after the accession to SEPA; technical solutions for the integration of instant payments and digitalization of the financial sector; Romania's experience in managing the relationship between commercial banks and the SEPA system. During the visit, the NBM delegation, which also included First Vice Governor Petru Rotaru and Vice Governor Mihnea Constantinescu, also analyzed other important aspects of efficient SEPA integration in Moldova, holding discussions with representatives of the Romanian Association of Banks. Moldova's admission to SEPA was announced on March 6, during the working visit to Brussels of the NBM delegation headed by Governor Anca Dragu. SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a system that unifies payments in euros, eliminating differences between domestic and international payments. It provides a modern and efficient framework for financial transactions. // 07.03.2025 - InfoMarket.
