Moldova’s domestic public debt in July 2024 increased by 103.8 million lei (+0.2%) and reached a new record high of 43 billion 916.8 million lei

The previous record maximum of domestic public debt occurred at the end of June 2024, when it amounted to 43 billion 813 million lei. According to the Ministry of Finance, in general, since the beginning of this year, Moldova’s internal public debt has increased by 4 billion 250.7 million lei (+10.7%). The increase in domestic public debt registered in January-July 2024 was mainly due to an increase in the issue of government securities on the primary market by approximately 4 billion 316 million lei. In particular, as of the end of July 2024, the debt on government securities issued on the primary market amounted to about 30 billion 097.48 million lei, which is 4 billion 315.99 million lei (16.7%) more than at the end of 2023 (25 billion 781.49 million lei), and its share accounted for 68.5% of the total domestic public debt. At the same time, the debt on bonds issued for the fulfillment by the Ministry of Finance of payment obligations arising from state guarantees dated November 17, 2014 and April 1, 2015, at the end of July 2024 amounted to 11 billion 751.2 million lei, unchanged, compared to the situation at the end of 2023 (11 billion 751.2 million lei). Its share accounted for 26.8% of the total amount of Moldova’s internal public debt at the end of July 2024. Herewith, the debt on converted government securities at the end of July 2024 amounted to 2 billion 068.13 million lei, decreasing by 65.3 million lei (-3.1%), compared with the situation at the end of 2023 (2 billion 133.43 million), and amounting to 4.7% of the total amount of domestic public debt at the end of July 2024. According to the Ministry of Finance, in January- July 2024, the weighted average interest rate on government securities sold at auctions amounted to 4.58%, which is 4.04% less than in 2023. By type of security, the yield was: government securities-91 days - 2.18%, GS-182 days – 4.31%, GS-364 days – 4.85%, Government bonds (GB)-2 years – 5.12%, GB-3 years – 5.16%, GB-5 years – 5.8%, GB-7 years - 5.79%, GB-10 years - 7%.
