Moldova will receive $98 million from the WB group to modernize road infrastructure and border crossings as part of the project “Connecting Moldova’s Villages”.

This is provided for by the relevant agreements, which were signed on June 19 in Chisinau by the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Andrei Spinu, and the head of the World Bank Representative Office in Moldova, Inguna Dobraja. In particular, they signed a loan agreement between Moldova and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (part of the WB group) for a total amount of $92.4 million, and a Financing Agreement between Moldova and the International Development Association (part of the WB group) for $5.6 million for the project “Connecting the Villages of Moldova” (Conectivitate rurală în Moldova). The project provides for the rehabilitation of more than 120 km of roads, as well as the modernization and improvement of security and checkpoints of Moldova on the border with Romania. As noted by the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spinu, in particular, repairs are planned in 3 sections: Corridor 5, R13 - Ivanovca-Izvoare-Varnița-Ocolina-M2 with a length of 35 km; Corridor 8.1 and Corridor 8.2 - Cornești-Boghenii Noi-Năpădeni M5 (G88) with a length of 33 km; Corridor 24 - R34-Ciobaclia -Tartaul -R56- Baimaclia - Ienichioi -R37 with a length of 43 km. The project will also improve the transport infrastructure adjacent to local roads, it is planned to modernize the customs posts in Leuseni and Giurgiulesti, as well as the construction of a border checkpoint in Ungheni. Road conditions will be improved, driver costs will be reduced and waiting times at checkpoints will be reduced.
