Romania intends to guarantee the energy security of Moldova.
This is stated in the draft Energy Strategy of Romania for 2025-2035. This document, defining the vision and establishing the fundamental goals for the development of national energy, was submitted by the Ministry of Energy of the neighboring country for public consultation. The policy document identifies national, European and global benchmarks that influence and shape Romania's energy policies and decisions. The energy strategy takes into account economic, technological and geopolitical transformations at the global and regional level, as well as the main challenges generated by the need to transition to a green economy, market fluctuations and Romania's border position in the EU and NATO, as well as the ongoing wars in its immediate vicinity. It is emphasized that since the energy security of Romania is inextricably linked with the security of Moldova, it is extremely important that the Romanian national energy sector has the ability to meet all the needs of Moldova at any time, regardless of the situation. Thus, Romania seeks to strengthen its role as a regional pillar of energy security. In the draft Energy Strategy of Romania for 2025-2035 it is indicated that connecting the natural gas and electricity transmission systems of Romania with the systems of Moldova is a strategic goal for both countries. The development of connections with Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Greece and Turkey is also of great importance. In this way, Romania can stand out as a regional provider of energy security. It is emphasized that Romania is the country with the market with the least dependence on natural gas imports. In addition to the favorable geostrategic position and the resources found in the Black Sea, Romania will play a decisive role in the region. In this context, the Energy Strategy establishes that Romania will maintain its current position as an energy and security exporter for Moldova, the region and the whole of Europe. The strategy emphasizes the importance of regional cooperation, especially for the construction of new transmission lines, as well as cooperation with other states in coordinating policies at European level. As noted, Romania must integrate the Moldovan electricity market into the national Romanian and European markets. In addition, Romania is and will be part of key regional projects and initiatives targeting both electricity and gas transmission infrastructure, with a particular focus on the implementation and completion of projects of common interest.// 14.06.2024 — InfoMarket.
