
Women of Moldova earn less than men, but live longer.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), on the occasion of International Women's Day, which is celebrated on March 8, presented a statistical portrait of women and men in Moldova. According to the statistics, women constitute 52.7% of Moldova's permanent population, men - 47.3%. For every 100 women in the country there are 90 men, at the same time, the older, the less men: at the age of 35 there are 91 men per 100 women, at the age of 65 - 61 men. In the under-14 age group, there are 106 boys for every 100 girls. Life expectancy for women is 8.6 years longer than for men: in 2022, life expectancy for women is 75.7 years, and 67.1 years for men. This gap is due to a higher rate of premature mortality among men, especially those of working age. In rural areas, life expectancy for both men and women is 2.2 years less than in urban areas. The average age of women at first marriage in 2022 was 26 years, and men - 29 years. On average, women marry for the first time at the age of 20-24. Women aged 25-64 have a higher level of education than men of the same age: 25.1% of women have a tertiary education (men 19%). Men leave the education system earlier than women in favor of entering the labor market. Women prefer the following general fields of study: educational sciences, social and behavioral sciences, public services, philology and arts. On the other hand, men mostly favor engineering technology and ICT. The predominance of women is registered in the fields of pedagogy (85.2%), health sciences (73.3%) and economic sciences (72%). The employment rate among women is lower than among men, with women earning on average 15.5% less than men. Thus, the average monthly gross salary of women in 2022 was 9618.4 lei, while that of men was 11380.7 lei. The biggest income gap between women and men is in the IT and financial sectors. The unemployment rate among men is higher than among women. At the same time, women are still underrepresented in leadership positions. In 2022, of the total number of managers at all levels, 55.4% were men and 44.6% were women. At the beginning of 2022, the share of women in the Moldovan Parliament was 40.4%. At the same time, in law enforcement bodies about 25% of employees are women, while among judges - more than 50%. In 2022, the poverty rate among women amounted to 31.4%, and among men - 30.8%. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 11.5 thousand victims of crime were registered in 2023. The share of men in the total number of victims amounted to 53.7% against 46.3% of women. Women are more often victims of domestic violence compared to men. According to the National Social Insurance Company (CNAS), as of January 1, 2024, women accounted for 63.35% of the total number of pensioners (674,900). As of January 1, 2023, the average age pension for men in the non-agricultural sector was 4253.3 lei, compared to 3242.7 lei for women.
