The EU will allocate 45 million euros in grants to improve transport links between Moldova and Romania via the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
The European Commission announced this, noting that the grant funding for the development of the transport infrastructure will allow to better connect Moldova with the EU. In particular, the European Commission welcomed the signing of 3 grant agreements within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) in the transport sector, worth almost 45 million euros, to improve transport links between Moldova and Romania via the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). These projects will modernize the transport infrastructure at the Ungheni, Albita-Leuseni and Reni-Giurgiulesti-Galati road border crossing points. These investments will strengthen the EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes, routes used after Russia's blockade of Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea to transport exports and imports from Ukraine and Moldova. European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean said that thanks to the close cooperation between Romania and Moldova, the EU can today start implementing 3 very important projects that will significantly increase the capacity and facilitate traffic flows on the Romania-Moldova section. According to her, the quick implementation is important because the projects will bring the EU candidate country Moldova even closer to the European Union, giving its citizens and businesses easier and faster access to the European internal market. On the Romanian side, 18 km of road will be modernized to improve customs services at the Ungheni border crossing. Moldova will build a new access road and border crossing point. Existing infrastructure on both sides of the Albita-Leuseni border crossing will be modernized to improve traffic flow management. The final project includes the expansion of the Giurgiulesti parking lot and procurement of customs control equipment. The EU-Moldova transport links were discussed during a meeting between European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean and Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean. At the same time, they announced a new tender for the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) in the transport sector, under which more than 7 billion euros will be allocated for projects on the development of railroads, inland waterways, sea or river ports and road infrastructure. For the first time, organizations from Moldova can directly apply for EU funding under this call for proposals after signing the Accession Agreement to the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). //27.10.2023 - InfoMarket.
