The government will ask parliament to once again extend the state of emergency throughout the country for another 60 days, starting on February 4.
This decision was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on the basis of the decision of the Commission for Emergency Situations. The need to extend the state of emergency is determined by the continuing threats to national security, as well as the risks of ensuring the stability of supplies in the country's energy market. As Interior Minister Ana Revenсo noted, Russia's military aggression against Ukraine continues. “Air strikes occur several times a week, launch points have a wide area, including the Black Sea. In this context, there are still great risks that the launched missiles will fly over the airspace of Moldova, as has already happened on several occasions. There is a risk of a new large wave of refugees due to the fighting. At the same time, the security of electricity and natural gas supplies to Moldova remains at risk, amid heightened volatility and unpredictability in international markets, the risk of Russia’s Gazprom reducing gas supplies to Moldova, and increased reliance on a short-term power purchase contract with MGRES ”, Ana Revenсo noted. She also noted the growth of information aggression generated by pro-Russian interest groups with the aim of destabilizing the social situation and public order in Moldova. The migration crisis also continues - almost 89 thousand foreign citizens remain in Moldova, including 43.5 thousand children. From March 1, 2023, a new temporary protection mechanism will be applied, but until then, the adoption of measures to manage migration issues is entrusted to the Commission for Emergency Situations. The state of emergency will allow the Commission for Emergency Situations to continue to quickly make decisions to overcome crises, apply mechanisms and levers to resolve the situation in such important areas as providing electricity and natural gas, managing the flow of refugees, ensuring public order and border security, etc. Recall that on February 24, 2022, the Parliament of Moldova introduced a state of emergency for 60 days due to the situation in Ukraine and security threats in Moldova, and subsequently extended it several times: from April 25 - for 60 days, from June 24 - for 45 days, from August 8 - for 60 days, from October 7 - for 60 days, from December 6 - for 60 days.// 01.02.2023 — InfoMarket
