"Moldova has created new opportunities for gas transportation to our country and to Ukraine, including through the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline," Andrei Spinu said.
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development stated this while commenting on the approval by the Government of Moldova of the necessary provisions and regulations on the application of the "virtual reverse" procedure for natural gas (backhaul). He noted that, thus, Moldova made another big step forward in ensuring its energy security and proper functioning of gas transportation in backhaul mode. Andrei Spinu explained that backhaul is a natural gas transaction, which involves the assignment and distribution of gas supplies in the opposite direction to the main physical gas flow, performed at certain one-way entry or exit points. This service is used in all European countries at interconnection points. Deputy Prime Minister noted that with the approval of the necessary regulations, new opportunities for gas transportation to our country as well as to Ukraine, including via the Trans-Balkan pipeline, are created. The backhaul procedure may be applied both by natural gas traders/suppliers and transport system operators without declaring these operations at the Customs Service. As noted by Constantin Borosan, State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, in the current situation, when natural gas flows through the national gas transportation system are no longer unidirectional, but go in both directions, both from east to west and west to east, the service of gas transportation in "virtual reverse" mode is a technical solution to ensure continuity of gas supplies to consumers. According to him, provision of backhaul service by natural gas transport operators increases attractiveness of use of the national transport system for European traders and suppliers who intend to create gas reserves in Ukraine. "Increased natural gas transit volumes through the national transportation system mean lower tariffs for transportation services and lower costs for citizens," Constantin Borosan stressed. // 12.01.2023 - InfoMarket.
