
Internal public debt of Moldova in January-August 2022 decreased by 619.33 million lei (-1.9%), amounting to 32 billion 662.05 million lei as of the end of August.
At the same time, in August, compared to the previous month, it increased by 612.81 million lei (+1.9%), as at the end of July 2022 it made 32 billion 049.24 million lei. It should be noted that the record level of Moldova’s internal public debt was registered at the end of July 2021, when it amounted to 34 billion 333.6 million lei. According to the Ministry of Finance, the decline in the internal public debt in 8 months of this year occurred mainly due to the reduction of the volume of government securities in the primary market. In particular, at the end of August the debt on government securities issued in the primary market amounted to about 18 billion 042.54 million lei, which is by 735.6 million lei (3.9%) less than at the end of 2021 (18 billion 778.15 million lei), and accounted for 55.2% of total internal public debt. At the same time, the debt on bonds issued for the fulfillment by the Ministry of Finance of payment obligations arising from state guarantees dated November 17, 2014 and April 1, 2015, at the end of August 2022 amounted to 12 billion 351.2 million lei, without changing, compared to the situation at the end of 2021. It accounted for 37.8% of the total amount of Moldova's internal public debt at the end of August 2022. At the same time, the debt on converted government securities at the end of August 2022 amounted to 2 billion 268.3 million lei, having increased, compared to the situation at the end of 2021, by 116.27 million lei (+5.4%) and amounting to 6.9% of the total amount of internal public debt at the end of July 2022. According to the Ministry of Finance, in January-August 2022, the weighted average interest rate on government securities sold at auctions was 15.81% (by types of government securities: 91 days - 14.2%, 182 days - 15.57%, 364 days - 16.56%, 2 years - 18.3%, 3 years - 13.02%, 5 years - 9.67%, 7 years - 10%), which is 10.73 percentage points more than in the same period of the previous year.
