Moldovan Parliament extends the state of emergency throughout the country for another 45-day period starting June 24.
MPs adopted this decision at Thursday's plenary session, on the government's initiative, in order to allow the Emergency Situations Commission to continue to take swift measures needed to solve a series of unprecedented crises caused by the war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita, while speaking in Parliament, said that with the ongoing energy crisis, decisions must be made to ensure the country's energy security. In addition, measures are needed to ensure food security and measures to better manage the supply chain and establish trade relations. The head of government stressed that the government's actions will not go beyond the mandate given by Parliament, and the Cabinet, through the Emergency Situations Commission, will continue to act transparently, and deviations from the legal framework will be proportionate and necessary to promptly manage and overcome the emergency situation. "We are constantly monitoring the situation to prevent and foresee consequences that may threaten Moldova's security, public order, as well as other aspects of social and economic life. Although we have a much smaller flow of refugees today than at the beginning of the war, the unpredictable situation in Ukraine could lead to a significant increase in this flow at any moment. At the same time, the consequences of the war are also affecting trade links and supply chains, as well as the oversaturation of transport infrastructure in Moldova. It is therefore necessary to rescale and reassess solutions and measures that will strengthen vital processes in Moldova and in the entire region. Under the present conditions, in which there are still risks related to the security of Moldova's energy supply, the extension of the state of emergency is important, in order to be able to intervene promptly to supplement the existent legal framework, in order to ensure all the consumers with energy resources and to maintain Moldova’s energy security," Prime Minister said. She stressed that in this situation, the government still needs the levers and instruments that would allow making decisions quickly and efficiently, which cannot be made within the ordinary legal framework. //23.06.2022 - InfoMarket.
