
The internal public debt of Moldova in January-May 2022 decreased by 1 billion 312.2 million lei (-3.9%), amounting to 31 billion 969.2 million lei at the end of May.
At the same time, in May, compared to the previous month, it decreased by 63.8 million lei (-0.2%). It should be noted that the record high of Moldova's internal public debt was registered at the end of July 2021, when it amounted to 34 billion 333.6 million lei, and at the end of April 2022 it was 32 billion 033 million lei. According to the Ministry of Finance, the decline in domestic public debt for 5 months of this year occurred mainly due to a decrease in the volume of issuance of government securities in the primary market. In particular, as of the end of May 2022, the debt on state securities issued on the primary market amounted to about 17 billion 349.66 million lei, which is 1 billion 428.5 million lei (7.6%) less than at the end of 2021 (18 billion 778.15 million lei), and it accounted for 54.3% of the total domestic public debt. Herewith, the debt on bonds issued for the fulfillment by the Ministry of Finance of payment obligations arising from state guarantees dated November 17, 2014 and April 1, 2015, at the end of May 2022 amounted to 12 billion 351.2 million lei, without changing, compared to the situation at the end of 2021. It accounted for 38.6% of the total amount of internal public debt of Moldova at the end of May 2022. Meanwhile, the debt on converted government securities at the end of May 2022 amounted to 2 billion 268.3 million lei, having increased, compared to the situation at the end of 2021, by 116.27 million lei (+5.4%) and amounted to 7.1% of the total amount of domestic public debt at the end of May 2022. According to the Ministry of Finance, in January-May 2022, the weighted average interest rate on government securities sold at auctions amounted to 13.77% (by types of government securities: 91 days - 13.36%, 182 days - 13.56%, 364 days - 14.16%, 2 years - 16.72%, 3 years - 12.88%, 5 years - 9.67%, 7 years - 10%), which is more by 8.79 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year.
