The European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it asks the EU institutions to grant Moldova the status of a candidate country for joining the European Union.
The document, adopted by the majority at the plenary session of the European Parliament, calls for increased financial support for Moldova from the EU, integration of the country into the EU Single Market, as well as the creation of a Support Group for Moldova, similar to the support group created for Ukraine, which will increase the staff of the EU in Moldova and provide the Moldovan authorities with more technical and administrative assistance, which is very important, especially now, in the context of the EU accession process. Member of the European Parliament, chairman of the delegation of the European Parliament in the Parliamentary Association Committee EU-Moldova Siegfried Mureşan, speaking in the European Parliament, said that Moldova is as important for the security and stability of the European Union as Ukraine. He noted that all of Europe has seen this in recent months, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moldovan authorities and citizens acted in a European spirit and offered food, shelter and medical assistance to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees who entered the country to escape the war. “That is why my goal from the very beginning was that everything that the European Parliament proposes to Ukraine from a European point of view, would also be offered to the Republic of Moldova. That is why I initiated this resolution and passed it with other political groups in the European Parliament. This resolution is the most ambitious document regarding the Republic of Moldova, ever adopted by an EU institution”, stated Siegfried Murešan. According to him, in the text of the resolution, the European Parliament also asks for Moldova's integration into the EU Single Market. It is planned that, thanks to entering the Single Market, Moldovan products will be able to freely export to the European market, more investors from the European Union will appear in Moldova, new jobs will be created, and people will enjoy product quality standards that correspond to the quality standards of the EU countries. Siegfried Mureşan explained that the costs of managing the Ukrainian refugee crisis are enormous for Moldova, a country already hit hard economically by the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the energy price crisis artificially provoked by Gazprom. That is why the resolution of the European Parliament calls on the European Union to increase financial support for the authorities of Moldova and its citizens. At the same time, it is proposed to create a support group for Moldova, similar to the support group created for Ukraine.// 05.05.2022 — InfoMarket
