The situation in Moldova’s energy sector, the problems in supplying the country with gas and electricity and energy security issues will be discussed at a meeting of the Supreme Security Council - Maia Sandu.

Moldovan President said this at a press conference on Friday. She noted that Moldova needs a serious plan to ensure its energy security and diversify energy sources, and these measures have become even more relevant in the context of the recent sharp rise in gas prices on the international market. The head of state said that in order to alleviate the situation in the medium term, Moldova needs, following the example of other countries, to invest more in technologies for more efficient energy consumption. “We are a poor country, and the analysis of energy consumption, in comparison with other countries, shows that we have large reserves for improving energy efficiency,” the President of the Republic of Moldova noted. According to her, for this, it is planned to mobilize more resources from development partners for projects in order to improve energy efficiency in the future, and implement the Energy Strategy. “The current gas crisis is grave and has a strong impact on everyone, but it has further strengthened us in our intention to address Moldova’s energy efficiency problems at an accelerated pace. We will discuss this at a meeting of the Supreme Security Council. We must have a serious plan to ensure energy security, diversify sources of energy supplies. The shock situation in the market may reoccur and we must have an alternative in the gas and electricity markets, internal resources to protect ourselves in the event of a new price shock in the external market. It is important for us not to depend on only one source of supply, to have alternatives, to create mandatory reserves of natural gas for 2-3 months in warehouses in Romania and Ukraine, to increase the energy efficiency of the economy, to develop production based on renewable sources. We must do what the authorities have not done over the past 30 years,” the President of the Republic of Moldova said. According to her, after the audit at Moldovagaz is completed, the situation in this company can be discussed at a meeting of the Supreme Security Council. // 19.11.2021- InfoMarket.
