
The total public debt of Moldova in January 2021 increased by 523.4 million lei (+ 0.8%) and reached a new record level of 68 billion 344.1 million lei.
The previous historical maximum of the total public debt of Moldova was 67 billion 820.7 million lei and was registered at the end of December 2020. According to the Ministry of Finance of Moldova, the increase in the total public debt in the first month of this year was due to the growth of both internal and external public debt, expressed in lei. In particular, the domestic public debt increased by 507.8 million lei (+ 1.7%) - from 29 billion 235.6 million lei (at the end of December 2020) to 29 billion 743.4 million lei (at the end of January 2021). At the same time, the external public debt in lei terms during the same period increased by 15.6 million lei (+ 0.04%) - from 38 billion 585.1 million to 38 billion 600.7 million lei. Herewith, the share of the internal public debt in the total amount of the public debt of Moldova at the end of January 2021 amounted to 43.5% (a month earlier - 43.1%), and the share of the external public debt - 56.5% (56.9%). In general, the share of total public debt in GDP at the end of January 2021 is estimated at 30.8% versus 33.5% at the end of 2020 and 25% at the end of 2019. Meanwhile, GDP in 2020, according to operational data, amounted to 202.2 billion lei (there is no official data from the NBS yet), and by the end of 2021 it is projected at 221.9 billion lei. The Ministry of Finance noted that at the end of January 2021, the share of public debt payable within 1 year amounted to 25.9% of the total, while the Public Debt Management Program in the Medium Term (2021-2023) "Provides parameters of 15-25%. The share of domestic public debt in the total volume of public debt was 43.5% (previously approved parameters: 35-50%), the proportion of external public debt in a certain currency in the total volume of external public debt at the end of January 2021 was 32.7% (approved parameters: 20-40%). The share of public debt with a variable interest rate in the total volume of public debt at the end of January 2021 was 37.7% with the parameters of 25-40%.
