IMF financial assistance has a positive impact on the development of Moldova's economy and the creation of conditions for long-term development – the NBM

This was stated by Anca Dragu, Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), during the meeting of the NBM delegation in Washington, D.C., with high-ranking officials of the International Monetary Fund: IMF Executive Director for Moldova Jeroen Klick, Director of the IMF European Department Alfred Kammer and Head of the IMF Mission in Moldova Alina Iancu. During the dialogue, the sides discussed the main achievements of the National Bank of Moldova in the implementation of the IMF program, as well as the Fund's technical assistance. The NBM head stressed that the financial assistance provided so far by the IMF has a positive impact on the development of Moldova's economy, while the IMF's contribution to the promotion and implementation of economic reforms is reflected in the creation of a favorable framework for long-term development. As regards the joint IMF-World Bank Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) to be implemented in 2025, Anca Dragu expressed willingness to actively participate in the successful completion of this assessment mission, which is of particular importance in Moldova's financial sector development strategy. The participants in the discussions also discussed macroeconomic developments and Moldova's development prospects, as well as the National Bank's reform program in order to meet Moldova's EU accession criteria. At the same time, the relevance of the IMF assessment, commissioned by the NBM, was emphasized, which highlighted the profile of a modern and transparent institution that implements “good practices of transparency in key areas”. The IMF assessment confirms NBM's commitment to transparency and international best practices. The discussions identified aspects that could be improved to further strengthen this transparency. The dialog also discussed Moldova's main progress over the last year, as reflected in the Enlargement Package, a set of reports presenting the main developments in the EU candidate countries. The bilateral discussions also focused on the Growth Plan for Moldova, approved by the European Commission, as well as on the NBM's participation in the Economic Reform Program (ERP). The priorities such as the economic and financial dialog between the EU and the candidate countries were also discussed. At the same time, within the spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group, meetings were held with other high-ranking IMF officials, including the IMF Deputy Executive Director for Moldova, Marnix Leonard Alexander van Rij and others. The series of meetings in Washington will continue today with bilateral talks with Deputy Director General Kenji Okamura. The main topics are related to the progress of IMF-supported reforms, with a focus on maintaining price stability and banking sector stability in Moldova. The annual spring meetings of the WB Group and the IMF provide a platform for dialog and exchange of experience between high-level representatives of the international financial sector, contributing to the search for solutions to current and future challenges. // 23.04.2025 - InfoMarket.
