
Moldova's internal state debt in 2024 increased by 4 billion 295.06 million lei (+10.8%) and reached a new record high of 43 billion 961.18 million lei
In particular, in December 2024 alone, compared to the previous month, it grew by 1 billion 096.03 million lei (+2.6%), as the figure stood at 42 billion 865.15 million lei at the end of November. It should be noted that the previous record high of the internal state debt was at the end of July 2024, when it amounted to 43 billion 916.8 million lei. According to the Ministry of Finance, the growth of the internal state debt in January-December 2024 was due to an increase in the issue of government securities (GS) on the primary market by 4 billion 459.3 million lei. In particular, at the end of December 2024, the debt on state securities issued on the primary market amounted to about 30 billion 240.84 million lei, up by 4 billion 459.35 million lei (17.3%) relative to end-2023 (25 billion 781.49 million lei), and accounted for 68.8% of the total internal state debt. At the same time, the debt on bonds issued to fulfill the Ministry of Finance's payment obligations arising from the state guarantees of November 17, 2014 and April 1, 2015, amounted to 11 billion 421.2 million lei as of the end of December 2024, decreasing by 330 million lei (-2.8%) compared to the situation as of the end of 2023 (11 billion 751.2 million lei). It accounted for 26% of the total amount of Moldova's internal state debt at the end of December 2024. At the same time, the debt on converted government securities at the end of December 2024 amounted to 2 billion 069.52 million lei, down by 63.91 million lei (-3%) compared to the situation at the end of 2023. (The debt on GS issued through direct placement by individuals amounted to 229.62 million lei (0.5% of the total amount). According to the data of the Ministry of Finance, in January-December 2024, the weighted average interest rate on GS sold at auctions amounted to 4.96%, down by 3.66%, compared to 2023. By types of securities, the yield amounted as follows: GS-91 days - 2.2%, GS-182 days - 4.68%, GS-364 days - 5.25%, Government Bonds (GB) -2 years - 5.57%, GB-3 years - 5.17%, GB-5 years - 5.87%, GB-7 years - 5.79%, GB-10 years - 7.47%.
