Moldova plans to organize textile waste management and a mandatory system of extended producer responsibility in this area.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Grigore Stratulat announced this at the conference “Sustainable Development in the Textile Industry: Challenges and Opportunities” held by the APIUS Association within the framework of the “Future Technologies” project funded by USAID, Sweden and the UK. According to him, a regulation on textile waste management is currently being developed, which will regulate in detail the process of collecting, sorting, reusing and recycling textiles. In this case, the authors will focus on European standards in this area. It will also propose introducing a mandatory system of extended producer responsibility in the textile industry, similar to that in place for other categories of waste (batteries, electrical and electronic equipment, vehicles, oils, packaging and tyres). Today, textile waste collected in the country is disposed of under contracts with authorized foreign operators. The Ministry of Environment is committed to supporting the textile industry by making it more sustainable and environmentally responsible. It is worth noting that from 2025, EU countries must ensure separate collection of textile products. According to the UN, the global fashion industry accounts for up to 10% of all carbon dioxide emissions. // 11.06.2024 — InfoMarket.
