Over 10 years, the resident population of Moldova has decreased by more than 15%.

According to updated data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the population with permanent residence in Moldova as of January 1, 2024 amounted to 2 million 423.3 thousand people, which is 72.8 thousand people (2.8%) less than at the beginning 2023. At the same time, compared to January 1, 2015, the country’s permanent population decreased by 430 thousand people (-15%). The population decline is caused by both migration processes (-59.6 thousand) and natural population decline (-9.7 thousand). It is reported that 53.4% of the population of Moldova are women (1 million 293.8 thousand), men - 46.6% (1 million 129.5 thousand). In general, the distribution of the population by region and by some age groups is almost even. The only thing that stands out is Chisinau municipality, where the proportion of people of working age is the highest and the proportion of elderly people the lowest compared to other regions. The largest share of young people (0-15 years old) is registered in ATU Gagauzia - 20.3%. The share of the elderly population (60/63 years old) increased in all development regions compared to 2023. The largest increase in the share of elderly people was in the Central region and the Southern region – by 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous year. The average age of the population as of January 1, 2024 increased by 0.6 years compared to the previous year (from 40.5 years to 41.1 years). The average age of the female population was 42.9 years, which is 3.8 years higher than the average age of the male population (39.1 years). The population pyramid at the beginning of 2024 clearly shows a declining trend in the population aged 25–29 years, reflecting the cumulative effect of negative net migration rates among young people in recent decades. The population aging rate (population aged 60 years and older per 100 inhabitants) at the beginning of 2024 was 25.2 people per 100 inhabitants, compared to 24.1 people in 2023. // 10.06.2024 — InfoMarket.
