The total public debt of Moldova in January 2023 increased by more than 3.6 billion lei (+3.8%) and reached a new record high, exceeding 98.27 billion lei.

According to the Ministry of Finance, in particular, at the end of January 2023, the total public debt of Moldova amounted to 98 billion 277.6 million lei and increased, in comparison with the previous month, by 3 billion 617.6 million lei (+3.8%). According to the Ministry of Finance of Moldova, the increase in the total public debt in January 2023 was due to an increase in both internal and external public debt. In particular, the domestic public debt increased by 589 million lei (+1.7%) - from 34 billion 492.4 million lei (at the end of December 2022) to 35 billion 081.4 million lei (at the end of January 2023). At the same time, the external public debt in lei over the same period increased by 3 billion 028.5 million lei (+5%) - from 60 billion 167.7 million lei to 63 billion 196.2 million lei. Herewith, the share of internal public debt in the total amount of public debt of Moldova at the end of January 2023 amounted to 35.7% (a month earlier - 36.4%), and the share of external public debt - 64.3% (a month earlier - 63.6%). In general, the share of total public debt in GDP at the end of January 2023 is estimated at 31.8% against 34% at the end of 2022. Meanwhile, according to preliminary data, GDP in 2022 will amount to 278.2 billion lei, and according to by the end of 2023, it is projected at the level of 308.8 billion lei. The Ministry of Finance noted that at the end of January 2023, the share of public debt payable within one year amounted to 27.3% of the total, the share of domestic public debt in the total public debt was 35.7%. The share of external public debt in a certain currency in the total volume of external public debt at the end of January 2023 was 40.7%, and the share of public debt with a variable interest rate in the total volume of public debt at the end of January 2023 was 49.6%.
